Afleet Alex, Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner: 2005
In honor of the Preakness Stakes this weekend, here is one of the most impressive victories in the history of the race. While Secretariat’s record-setting pace in 1973 and Smarty Jones’ blow out in 2004 were spectacular, the recovery Afleet Alex made at the top of the stretch after being knocked to his knees is unforgettable. The small horse and his jockey demonstrated an indescribable amount of athleticism by powering home after the nearly catastrophic incident.
